Assalamualaikum and ola!
I did my oral yesterday on the 1st of March. I gave a talk on my title up there , about courtesy. So this is how it goes,
"Assalamualaikum and I bid good morning to my beloved English teacher, Puan Baizura, and to all my friends. I am here to give a talk about the importance of courtesy among students in school.
In this rapidly changing world, people have been commenting that courtesy is becoming quite rare among the younger generations or better known as 'gen y' like us. Have we forgotten how to be courteous or have we not learnt courtesy? Who is supposed to be blame for such matter? Our parents, teachers, siblings, grandparents, or us?
The attitude of a person depends on the surrounding they live with. The biggest impact on someone's attitude is the ones who are close to them. This is because whatever these people say or do, will give a reflection of how the teenagers will react. We usually hear that people blame the parents for not instilling courtesy in their children. However, I believe, that as they grow, the environment of their living will effect their livelihood.
Before we can make courtesy a way of life, we need to know what it really means. To me, courtesy is much more than just saying 'thank you' and 'excuse me'. It means being considerate toward others at all times, listening while others are talking, being sensitive when the need arises, and most of all, we must be polite to everyone we meet. It also means showing respect to everyone we meet and we must be humble.
Generosity comes from within the person and reflects good upbringing. In this modern world where people are being more and more materialistic, common courtesy is no longer considered an important trait. Let me ask you, how often do we greet our teachers when we meet them along the corridors? Have we ever offer ourselves to carry the books or heavy bags that the teachers are carrying? Seldom do we see people do so. Even on public transport, seeing someone give up their seed to an elderly person, disabled person or a pregnant woman is a very rare scene. Priority seating has been mandatory in many service industries and many public transportations has stressed the importance of courtesy among all the generations of public transit users.
So my dear friends, let us be more courteous towards one another. I hope that from today onwards all of us will be more considerate when we deal with others. Saying 'thank you', 'excuse me' and 'you are welcome' won't cost us ANYTHING, but it can show our appreciation towards one another. Treat others with respect and be humble as how you want them do to you.
Remember, being rude is contagious, but so is a smile! Lets start now. Thank you. "
